TransferWise’s workforce triples in a year

28. May 2015

The Estonian-founded money transfer firm TransferWise has increased its number of employees to 300, from a hundred just year ago.

TransferWise’s HQ is in London, but 80 percent of the company’s employees work in Tallinn. TransferWise also has smaller offices in New York and Tampa. Berlin office is due to open this year.

The company is very international, employing people from almost 30 nationalities.

TransferWise was started by two Estonians – Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann in London in 2011. Hinrikus was previously Estonian-developed Skype’s first employee and Käärmann worked for Deloitte. They founded the company making transfers between the British pound and euro. It now transfers in most major currencies and continues to grow fast.

British businessman Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, invested 22 million euros (25 million dollars) into TransferWise last year.
